Accessory Structures

Accessory structures are separate from your main home, but must be on the property. Here are some examples of accessory structures: detached garages, garden sheds, swimming pools, gazebos and play equipment. Local zoning by-laws regulate their size, type and location.

A building permit is required for any detached accessory structure that is 10 square meter (or about 108 square feet) in size or greater; or any attached structure regardless of size.

Sample Deck Project

Second floor decks or any decks over 2 feet tall needs a building permit. Some municipalities such as Markham doesn't allow for second floor decks, in which case you will need a Minor Zoning Variance done. Call us to get a free consultation if you are planning for a project.

Sample Carport/Garage Project

You will need a permit for building a carport/garage. Check local zoning bylaw to see setback and size regulations.
